Leadership coaching for individuals and teams

Leadership Team Coaching

What is leadership team coaching?

"...helping the team to improve performance, and the processes by which performance is achieved, through reflection and dialogue."
Hackman, J R and Wageman, R (2005) A theory of team coaching, Academy of Management Review, 30 (2), pp 269-87

When might your team benefit from leadership team coaching?

When you're just forming
Whether you’re part of a newly created leadership team, or merging with another team, coaching can accelerate your collective effectiveness, and give hands on experience in how to continually learn and improve your team performance.

When you've been working together for a while
Whether you want to achieve yet higher levels of impact as a leadership team, or you’re feeling stuck or have hit a bump in the road, team coaching can help you achieve your goals.

When you're going through change
When your team is leading others through change, team coaching helps ensure that your collective leadership embeds the change effectively.

How does a leadership team coaching programme start?

The first stage is Discovery, and includes three steps:

Step 1
Through 1 to 1 conversations and 360 degree feedback tools, and based on rigorously researched models of high performing leadership teams, I work with your team and its stakeholders to build an insightful picture of what’s working well, and what could be even better.

Step 2
I then meet with the team leader for a 1 to 1 coaching session on the
emerging themes. We discuss what that means for his or her own leadership development goals.

Step 3
I facilitate a workshop with the team to explore the themes collectively, and help the team decide what they will work on together.

What happens after that?

For some teams, the coaching programme begins and ends with the Discovery stage. It’s all they need to plot a course for working more effectively together, and with greater impact.

Some teams work with me on further stages of their journey to higher performance as a team. This typically takes the form of a combination of:

  • 1 to 1 coaching sessions for team members
  • 1 to 1 coaching sessions for the team leader
  • Tailor-made team coaching away days and workshops, designed and facilitated by the coach
  • Observed sessions of the team conducting its usual business, with real-time feedback.

How can I find out more?

I’m always happy to chat, and answer questions, with no obligation to you whatsoever, because I’m deeply curious about people’s teams and what’s working and what’s not. Email me at julia@whitneyandassociates.uk
